8 kg, 9 kg or 10 kg Washing Machine: What Size Do You Really Need?
An 8 kg washing machine (17.6 lb of dry laundry) suits 1–3 people, 9 kg a family of 4, and 10 kg 5 people or more. Based on store prices in November 2026, the difference between 8 and 9 kg is usually ₪100–300 (NIS), and between 9 and 10 kg another ₪200–400. So in most cases it’s worth going up one size, provided the machine fits the niche.
We did not physically test the machines. The comparison is based on specs published by manufacturers and stores, prices we saw on Israeli price comparison sites and the official importers’ warranty terms. Below: a sizing table, dimensions, consumption, and 8, 9 and 10 kg models.
The short answer

What to look at before buying
| What to check | What it is | Our recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| Capacity by household | Capacity is the maximum weight of dry laundry on the cotton program. On synthetics and delicates programs, capacity is about half. | 8 kg for 1–3 people, 9 kg for 4, 10 kg for 5 or more or anyone who washes double duvets at home. |
| Machine depth | 8–9 kg machines also come in slim versions; 10 kg and larger machines are usually deeper. | The LG WFS8014WB and WFS9014WW are listed at about 47.5 cm deep (some sellers write 53.5, so check). The LG WF10114WBW is about 56.5 cm deep. Measure the niche including the tap and hose. |
| Spin speed | How much water stays in the clothes after the spin. In a large drum at full load it matters more. | At 9–10 kg prefer 1,400 RPM, especially if you have a dryer. 1,200 RPM is enough for line-drying. |
| Electricity and water use | On the new label, consumption is shown in kWh per 100 cycles on the Eco 40-60 program. | An efficient 9 kg machine reaches about 44 kWh per 100 cycles per the specs. The 8 kg AEG LF61842BM states about 0.79 kWh and 52 liters on a full Eco cycle. |
| Automatic load sensing | Sensors that weigh the laundry and adjust water and time (AI DD, ActiveWater Plus, ProSense). | Especially important on a 10 kg or larger machine, where most loads will be partial. |
| Warranty | An official importer (yevuan rasmi) provides technician service and a warranty per certificate. Some sellers add a motor warranty. | Make sure of the IL suffix on Bosch models (BSH warranty) and the official importer’s name on the invoice for LG and Samsung models. |
An 8 kg washing machine: who is it enough for?
An 8 kg washing machine is enough for most households of 1–3 people, and for a family of 4 that washes almost every day.
8 kg is the weight of dry laundry on the cotton program. In practice that’s roughly a full drum of a small family’s bath towels, or a double bedding set with a few towels. Most daily loads weigh 3–5 kg, so even an 8 kg machine will run at partial load most of the time.
The advantages of 8 kg: the lowest price in the category (in November 2026, 8 kg Bosch and LG models start at about ₪1,750–1,870), a shallower body on some models, and lighter weight for delivery and placing in the niche. The disadvantages: a double duvet doesn’t always fit, and a growing family will quickly feel the need for an extra cycle a day.
If you’re at a stage where the family is still expected to grow, consider going up to 9 kg now. The price difference is small, and a machine lasts many years. General recommendations for choosing a machine, including brands and budget, are in our best washing machine guide.
What exactly fits in 8 kg? As a rough estimate, a T-shirt weighs about 150–200 g, jeans about 600–800 g, a large bath towel about 500–700 g and a double bedding set about 1.5–2 kg. So 8 kg is a lot more clothes than it looks in the basket. What actually limits you isn’t weight but volume: towels and duvets take up a lot of drum space, and clothes need room to move to wash well. So fill the drum to about a hand’s width below the top, and don’t stuff it.
An 8 kg machine is also a good choice for a rented apartment, a studio unit or as a second machine in a large home. In those situations, depth, weight and price matter more than any extra kilo.
At November 2026 prices, there’s almost no reason to go below 8 kg on a front-loader. 6–7 kg machines are sold mainly by less-known brands, sometimes with a spin of only 800–1,000 RPM, and the price difference vs an 8 kg machine from a known brand is a few hundred shekels. The exception is a top-loading washing machine, where 6–7 kg is the standard because of the narrow body.
8, 9 or 10 kg: a sizing table and prices
The price difference between the sizes is relatively small, so the size should be decided by the amount of laundry and the niche, not the budget.
Based on prices we saw in stores and on price comparison sites in November 2026:
- 8 kg: about ₪1,750–2,500 (e.g. LG WFS8014WB, Bosch WAN28278IL, AEG LF61842BM). Suits 1–3 people.
- 9 kg: about ₪1,850–3,600 (e.g. LG WFS9014WW, LG WF9014WB, Bosch WAN28289IL, Bosch WGG244Z9IL). Suits 4 people.
- 10 kg: about ₪2,100–3,950 (e.g. LG WF10114WBW, Bosch WGG256Z9IL). Suits 5 people or more.
- 13 kg and up: about ₪3,000–4,600 (e.g. LG WF13314WBC). For very large families or washing duvets and bath mats.
Within the same brand and series, going from 8 to 9 kg usually costs ₪100–300, and from 9 to 10 kg another ₪200–400. The bigger price difference comes from the series (basic vs premium), not capacity.
Israeli searches also feature “10 kg washing machine” and “Bosch 8 kg” a lot. If you’re deciding between Bosch models of different sizes, read our Bosch washing machine guide, and if LG is at the top of your list, our LG washing machine guide.
Remember that prices on comparison pages change almost every week, especially around holidays, Black Friday and year-end sales. What’s more stable is the gap between sizes within the same series. If you see a 9 kg model at the price of an 8 kg model from the same series, that’s usually an opportunity, provided the seller gives the official importer’s warranty and not just the reseller’s.
Another important distinction: some models look identical and differ only in the code suffix or door color. For example, LG sells the WFS9014WW in white and the WF9014WB with a dark door and different specs (1,400 RPM and a different depth). Compare the full specs, not just the photo.
A 9 kg washing machine: the balance point for a family of 4
A 9 kg washing machine is the safe choice for a family of 4: enough room for a big load, at a price very close to 8 kg.
A family of 4 usually accumulates 4–6 loads a week. With 9 kg you can combine a load of towels and a load of dark clothes when needed, and wash double bedding with towels in the same cycle. The difference shows mainly on weekends and holidays, when there’s a lot of laundry at once.
Two questions to ask before choosing a 9 kg model:
- How much depth do you have? If the niche is shallow, the LG WFS9014WW is listed at about 47.5 cm deep. If you have 57 cm of depth, the LG WF9014WB gives 1,400 RPM.
- Will you use a dryer? If so, prefer 1,400 RPM. The Standards Institution of Israel notes that a fast spin before drying saves energy and shortens drying time.
At Bosch, 9 kg models split between Series 4 (like the WAN28289IL, from about ₪1,880) and Series 6 (like the WGG244Z9IL, about ₪2,850–3,590), which adds Reload, AntiStain and 50 dB washing. If the machine stands next to a bedroom or in an open kitchen, Series 6’s quiet is worth checking.
In a family of 4 with small children, a good quick program matters as much as capacity. Almost all the models we mentioned include a 14–30 minute program for a small load (e.g. Speed 14 on LG and SuperQuick 15/30 on Bosch). It suits kindergarten and school clothes needed tomorrow morning, but not very dirty laundry or a full load. Per LG’s specs, the 14-minute program is limited to about 2 kg.
A steam program can also save time: Iron Assist on Bosch and Steam on LG reduce wrinkles, so some clothes don’t need ironing. It’s a feature that comes on basic 9 kg models, and you don’t have to go up to an expensive series to get it.
And if you’re torn between a regular 9 kg and a 9 kg slim: the narrow version saves about 9 cm of depth, but usually comes with a 1,200 RPM spin rather than 1,400. In a home without a dryer it’s hardly noticeable, since laundry dries on the line anyway. In a home with a dryer, an extra 200 RPM slightly reduces drying time every cycle, and over years that adds up. So the simple rule: shallow niche and no dryer, slim; depth available and a dryer, a regular model with 1,400 RPM.
A 10 kg washing machine and up: when it’s worth it
A 10 kg washing machine is worth the extra if there are 5 or more people at home, if you wash double duvets, or if you want to wash fewer times a week.
What you get: a drum of about 70 liters (per the Bosch WGG256Z9IL specs), more room for clothes to move and therefore fewer wrinkles, and the ability to wash two days’ laundry in one cycle. What you pay: about ₪200–400 more than 9 kg in the same series, a deeper body (about 56–65 cm), and more weight for delivery.
Important: most loads in a machine like this will be partial. So it doesn’t cost too much, choose a model with automatic load sensing, like AI DD on LG or ActiveWater Plus on Bosch. These adjust the water and program length to the actual amount of laundry.
For very large families there’s also 13 kg. The LG WF13314WBC costs about ₪3,000–4,570 per store prices, and per the specs includes automatic dosing (ezDispense) and Wi-Fi. If you’re considering a large machine to avoid a dryer, it’s better to check our washer-dryer combo guide or best clothes dryer guide, because washing capacity alone doesn’t solve drying in winter.
Another consideration with a large machine is spin balance. When there’s one heavy item in the drum (a duvet, a bath mat), the machine struggles to balance and may skip the full spin. Models with Auto Balance or AntiVibration (mentioned in the specs of the LG WF13314WBC and Bosch WGG256Z9IL) handle this better, but it’s better to add a few towels to a duvet to balance the load. A 10 kg machine standing on an unlevelled floor will shake more than an 8 kg machine, so don’t skip adjusting the feet after installation.
On price: per comparison pages, the LG WF10114WBW starts at about ₪2,100 and the Bosch WGG256Z9IL at about ₪2,930. The difference comes mainly from the series (a spin of up to 1,600 RPM, AntiStain and a VarioDrum on the Bosch), not capacity. If you don’t need the extras, a basic 10 kg gives most of the benefit.
Dimensions and niche: how to make sure the machine fits
Almost all front-loaders are 60 cm wide and 85 cm high (about 24 × 33.5 in); what changes between 8, 9 and 10 kg is the depth, so that’s what you need to measure.
Per the specs shown in stores:
- LG 8 and 9 kg slim models: about 47.5 cm deep.
- Regular 9–10 kg machines: about 56–57 cm deep (e.g. the LG WF9014WB and WF10114WBW, about 56.5 cm).
- 10 kg and larger machines in premium series: sometimes deeper. Check the importer’s page.
How to measure correctly:
- Measure the niche depth from the wall to the front edge of the counter or door frame.
- Add 5–10 cm at the back for the tap, drain hose and cable.
- Check the door opens fully. On LG the door opens up to 150 degrees per the specs.
- Measure the doors and passages in your home. The Standards Institution of Israel recommends doing this before buying.
If you don’t have 60 cm of width at all, the option is a top-loading washing machine about 40 cm wide, but then capacity drops to 6–7 kg.
Also watch the height if you plan to stack a dryer on top. Two 85 cm appliances with the stacking kit reach about 1.75 m (5 ft 9 in), so the dryer’s top panel is high. If there’s a cabinet or shelf above the niche, also measure the free height. And in older apartments, check that the floor can carry a machine of 60–80 kg plus the water and laundry while running, and that it doesn’t sink or shake.
Electricity and water use by machine size
A larger machine uses slightly more per full cycle, but washes more each cycle, so consumption per kg of laundry is almost the same or lower.
Per the figures stores publish for the Eco 40-60 program:
- AEG LF61842BM, 8 kg: about 0.79 kWh and 52 liters per full cycle.
- LG WF9014WB, 9 kg: about 44 kWh per 100 cycles, i.e. about 0.44 kWh per weighted cycle, and about 50 liters.
Comparisons between machines should be made by this figure, not just the letter. Israel has been moving to the European energy label (A–G) since 2022, and the old regulations are still in force in parallel, so stores sometimes show a “previous rating” and a new rating for the same model. Details in our best washing machine guide.
On an annual basis, a family running about 4 Eco cycles a week on a machine of about 45–50 kWh per 100 cycles uses about 95–105 kWh a year. The difference between an 8 and a 10 kg machine is tens of shekels a year at most. What matters much more: washing at 30–40°C instead of 60, and filling the drum as much as possible.
Water: an efficient 8–9 kg machine uses about 50–52 liters on a full Eco cycle per the specs. A family washing 4 times a week uses about 10–11 cubic meters of water a year for the washing machine. Here too the difference between sizes is small, and washing at full load saves more than any choice of model. If the water in your area is hard, make sure to run a drum-clean program once a month, because limescale raises the heating element’s electricity use over time.
Common mistakes in choosing a size and how to avoid them
The most common mistake is choosing by price alone and then discovering the machine is too small or doesn’t fit the niche.
- Buying 7 kg for a family of 4: you save ₪200–300 and pay with an extra cycle almost every day.
- Buying 10 kg for a couple: not terrible, but most loads will be half a drum, and the machine is deeper.
- Forgetting the depth: a 10 kg machine may stick out of the niche and block a passage.
- Ignoring the spin: if you have a dryer, a 9–10 kg machine with 1,200 RPM will lengthen drying. Prefer 1,400 RPM or more.
- Ignoring the importer: the same model may be sold as an official import and a parallel import (yevu makbil). With Bosch look for the IL suffix and a BSH warranty, and with LG and Samsung ask for the importer’s name on the invoice.
- Overloading: the Standards Institution of Israel warns against stuffing laundry beyond the manufacturer’s instructions. An 8 kg machine filled to the brim washes less well.
If you plan to stack a dryer on the machine, check there’s a suitable stacking kit for both models. Most dryers are 8–9 kg. For information on dryer types, see our condenser dryer guide.
Finally, don’t forget the user experience: a wide door (about 30 cm on LG per the specs, about 32 cm on some Bosch models) makes loading duvets easier, and a display with an accurate finish time helps you plan. Ask in the store whether you can see the machine on display, and check the height of the detergent drawer and the comfort of the buttons before deciding. (Israel runs on 230V/50Hz; a 110V US machine won’t work here without a transformer.)
The bottom line
1–3 people: 8 kg. 4 people: 9 kg.

FAQ: 8 kg washing machine Israel
Is an 8 kg washing machine enough for a family of 4?
Yes, if you wash 5–6 times a week. If you prefer fewer cycles or wash duvets at home, 9 kg is better. The price difference between 8 and 9 kg is usually ₪100–300.
How much does an 8 kg washing machine cost in Israel?
Based on store prices in November 2026, an 8 kg machine from a known brand with an official importer costs about ₪1,750–2,500. For example, the LG WFS8014WB from about ₪1,750 and the Bosch WAN28278IL from about ₪1,870.
What’s the difference between a Bosch 8 kg and a Bosch 9 kg?
Mainly capacity and price. The 8 kg Bosch WAN28278IL starts at about ₪1,870, and Bosch 9 kg models start at about ₪1,880 in Series 4 and about ₪2,850 in Series 6 (WGG244Z9IL). Details in our Bosch washing machine guide.
Does a 10 kg washing machine use more electricity?
Slightly more per full cycle, but per kg of laundry consumption is similar. If most loads are small, choose a model with automatic load sensing so the machine adjusts water and time to the actual amount.
How deep is a 9 kg washing machine?
It depends on the model: slim versions like the LG WFS9014WW are listed at about 47.5 cm deep, and regular models like the LG WF9014WB at about 56.5 cm. The width is almost always 60 cm and the height 85 cm.
Does a double duvet fit in an 8 kg machine?
Sometimes, but it’s cramped. For comfortable washing of double duvets, 9–10 kg is better, and check that the machine has a duvet or bulky-items program.
A 10 kg washing machine or a washer-dryer combo?
They solve different problems. 10 kg solves laundry volume; a washer-dryer combo solves drying when there’s no room for a separate dryer. If there’s room, a separate washer and dryer are usually faster.
How many RPM does a 9 kg washing machine need?
1,200 RPM is enough for line-drying. If you have a dryer, prefer 1,400 RPM, because a fast spin leaves less water and shortens drying.
Is there a warranty difference between sizes?
Not necessarily. The warranty depends on the importer and seller, not capacity. Ask for the official importer’s warranty certificate and check whether there’s an extended motor warranty.
Is a 13 kg washing machine worth it?
Only for very large families or anyone who washes a lot of large items. The LG WF13314WBC costs about ₪3,000–4,570 per store prices, and the machine body is larger, so measure the niche.
